Farming Ecosystem

Did you know that one of the great unsung heroes of farming and agriculture is the bee! Why bees? In the same way that life depends on water and oxygen, crops and the food that you eat depend on bees.

Why? Because they are the master pollinators. We tend to only associate bees with honey. But the miraculous thing that they do is pollinate many of the things that we love to eat and smell, from vegetables to flowers.

Bees spend most of their time collecting pollen that is found in the flowering parts of plants. This is a great source of protein that bees use to feed their developing offspring. Generally, bees work on one variety of flower at a time, before moving on to the next flower. This process results in cross pollination and creates a pathway to producing seed for the next generation of plants.

Next time you see or eat those beautiful fruits, vegetables, or flowers, you just may want to thank a bee.
